Migration and integration policy in the

Federal Republic of Germany since the 1950s

Wednesdays from 6:00 p.m. to 8:15 p.m

“Germany” as a migration destination awakens hopes and fears. At its border, dreams and nightmares collide: there are the dreams of those who are outside and might come if they could. They awaken nightmares inside that strangers could actually come and demand participation in the supposed happiness in the middle of “Fortress Europe”. Behind the fear of the foreign there is also the fear of one's own - of one's job, social situation and cultural identity. But social fear is one of the most dangerous elements for society and politics. Where the edge of social trust ends, there is a risk of a fall from order into rulelessness. The German experience is only a short time ago.” – With this short but succinct foray, Prof. Dr. Klaus J. Bade the immigration problem in the Federal Republic of Germany.

Migration has become one of the major socio-political issues of our time with many social, economic and political facets, ranging from the common “deportation practice” to the “integration debate”, from the “shortage of skilled workers” to “skilled migration”. In our working group We want to address political questions about migration and integration of foreign citizens. We do not limit ourselves to the current situation of migrants in the Federal Republic of Germany, but also compare the changes in German migration policy after the end of the Second World War to the present and try to clarify the profound ambivalences of this policy.
